We spent most of today trying to digest what transpired over the last less-than-24-hours. The babies were doing fantastically in the NICU - on CPAP, resting and breathing comfortably. Amy started pumping today, and actually got quite a bit of colostrum the first day! We rested and visited with family. Amy's parents had driven up from Modesto just as soon as they found out that the babies were coming, and arrived Sunday night at about 9pm. CJ, Vicki, Evan and Nana all came to visit and meet the new arrivals. We had a great visit - it was so good to see my brother and get a big hug from him when he came in. Being surrounded by family after such an ordeal was very comforting and reassuring for us both.
Daddy changed his first diaper today! I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself, with little Jacob. Love that sticky gooey meconium poopy.... ewww. Mommy changed Aidan's diaper, and Aidan decided to let loose with a stream of pee! Oops! Gotta watch those little boys... :) He got himself a bonus holding session with Daddy while they changed out his bedding. I hope that he doesn't figure out that when he pees on himself, he gets held... hmm.... ;)
After everyone had left, we were sitting on Amy's hospital bed while she was pumping and trying to figure out names. We had first thought of Isaac and Jacob, but neither one looked like an Isaac to us. Independently, we both felt that one of the boys was an Aidan, but we didn't initially agree on which one. For the second name, we thought maybe Caleb or Jacob. We had previously agreed on Jamieson and Alexavier as middle names. Lim is a family name, my grandfather's surname, to be exact. They both carry his name to honor him. We decided to hold the babies, spend some time with them, and see what names seem to fit. At 11pm, we went to the NICU to hold our children for the first time. We spent time with each one individually, holding them and getting to know them, looking into their faces and seeing glimpses of ourselves. We decided that baby A would be Aidan Jamieson Lim, and set about naming baby B. As we thought over our choices, something interesting dawned on me. Aidan and Jacob. Amy and Jonathan. (My legal first name) And, their initials are mirror images of each other: Aidan Jamieson and Jacob Alexavier. With that, the names were chosen. And the funny thing is, now that we've named them, they don't look like they could be called anything else! :)
I know I've already told you guys this, but you did such a great job of finding the boys' names! Love, love, love 'em - your boys *and* their names! I love all the symmetry involved, and how you almost let the names come to you. And that last part of your post? That's how you know these names were meant to be! :-)
