Happy 5 weeks, boys! We had a great day with the boys today. Aidan took his whole feed nursing today and Jacob wasn't far behind with his feedings. Daddy got to feed both boys again and both of them seem to be building more and more strength with each feeding. While Gavin was feeding Jacob, he noticed that Jacob was using his tongue a lot on the nipple of the bottle. He was able to finish most of the feeding with the bottle but we voiced our concern to Greg. He suggested that we try a different nipple with him and also have a consult with the lactation consultant and the Occupational Therapist to make sure he is getting the help he needs to place his tongue in the right place to be able to nurse and eat from the bottle. We know that he also is learning and we want to give him whatever help he needs to be successful.
We also had a great time taking pictures of the boys with Pooh and Piglet. We are still so amazed by how big they are getting. Jacob is quickly catching up with his brother and we are wondering if he will soon pass him. We'll see what happens!

Today Nana came with me to see the boys. We made it for the 11am feeding and walked in to find Jacob wide awake with the hiccups. I LOVE when the boys get hiccups! I am sure they hate it but they squeak with each hiccup. Too cute! Nana was surprised with how much the boys have grown in the week since she has seen them. Our nurse Sheila was taking care of the boys today and I was happy to see her because she is a lactation nurse as well and I knew she could help me with Jacob. She explained to me that the OT would be in on Tuesday and suggested we try a different nipple that may help Jacob get the hang of things. As Sheila was feeding Jacob she did notice that although he seemed to know what to do, he still was concentrating quite a bit on remembering to suck, swallow and breath at the same time. She was sure he was just still learning and that there was most likely nothing wrong. We will still have the OT come in tomorrow to make sure but I feel so much better. He did surprise us at his 2pm feeding though...he took 34 cc's from the breast! Yay! He's getting there! Can't see what tomorrow will bring!
A discharge nurse also came in to see me today! Yay! Even though the boys still have about another week to go, the hospital is starting to get all the paperwork started for their departure. I learned that there will be a nurse that will come to our house in the weeks after the boys come home to check on them and also weigh them. We also will have a follow up eye appointment on October 14th to make sure that their eyes are still developing well and the hospital will make the boys' first pediatrician appointment for us. Sounds like we'll still have a little help even after we leave!
